Open every day of summer including Christmas and New Year’s Day, Taronga Zoo Sydney has created five special itineraries especially for this summer spanning Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia that take you on a journey around globe and help you get to know some of the more than 4,000 animals that call the zoo home.
While the zoos newest arrivals are sure to attract attention, there is plenty to see at Taronga’s recently opened African Savannah precinct, with three-year-old lion brothers Lwazi and Ato showcasing their playful antics alongside the iconic species like Giraffes, Zebras, Meerkats and Fennec Fox.
As the weather heats up, set yourself up for a splash at Taronga’s iconic Red Energy Seals for the Wild presentation or take in the harbour breeze and views at QBE Free Flight Bird Show.
For an aerial adventure, strap on a helmet and harness, and get ready to climb at Taronga’s adrenaline-fueled Wild Ropes course taking you up into the trees with amazing views out to Sydney Harbour and Australian animals down below.
Taronga beyond the zoo

To take your Zoo adventure to the next level, stay the night at one of Taronga’s unforgettable overnight experiences. Go on safari in the heart of Sydney and wake up with the animals at Roar and Snore or have a sleepover with some of Australia’s unique wildlife at the Wildlife Retreat at Taronga. Both experiences are open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day for an unforgettable way to spend the festive season.
For budding Zoologists, Taronga’s Cadet and Junior Keeper programs offer kids aged 8-17 years an unforgettable way to explore the zoo and learn about wildlife conservation, while the Zoo Adventure school holiday program provides kids aged 5-10 with jam-packed days of fun and adventure.
Big kids need not miss out on all the fun, with the Keeper for a Day program giving adults the chance to shadow a keeper as their go about their daily duties taking care of some of the zoo’s best-known animals. For something extra special, get up close and personal with the animals in a koala encounter, penguin feed or VIP reptile experience or lend a hand to the keepers in a platinum tiger experience.
If one day of adventure isn’t enough, for families who plan to visit more than twice a year a Taronga Zoo Friends annual membership is a great way to see our animals again and again. A membership provides 12-months of adventure for the whole family leaving plenty of time to make some magical memories, and as Taronga is a not-for-profit, a membership also helps support Taronga’s important conservation and education programs around the globe.
Cadet Keepers offers young adults aged 12 – 17 years old a sneak peek at a career in conservation. The hands-on program guides teens through the daily routines and responsibilities of a Taronga Keeper with plenty of opportunities to meet the animals. Prices start at $110 per child, per day.
A hands-on day of fun, Taronga’s Junior Keeper program gives kids at 8-11 years old a chance to go behind-the-scenes at the zoo, learn about conservation and get up close with some unique Australian fauna. Prices start at $110 per child, per day.
Taronga’s fun and educational Zoo Adventures school holiday program for kids aged 5 to 10 years old takes would be conservationists on an exciting zoo journey to learn about animals and the environments they live in. Prices start at $69 per child, per day.
If you’ve ever dreamt of working with animals Keeper for a Day takes you behind-the-scenes to see a different side to Taronga. Shadow a keeper as their go about their daily duties taking care of some of the zoo’s best-known animals. Experiences are priced at $350 per person and are available on Wednesday and Saturdays.
Taronga’s adrenaline-fueled Wild Ropes courses take you into the tree tops for an unparalleled look at Sydney Harbour. With four courses available, the experiences are suitable for kids through to adults, with prices starting from $37 for adults, $32 for Juniors and $22 for children.
Wake up to stunning views of Sydney Harbour and sounds of the animals at Roar and Snore. A stay includes intimate animal encounters, fascinating keeper talks, delicious food and safari-style accommodation, with summer stays starting at $771 per twin share.
Have a sleepover with some of Australia’s unique wildlife at the brand-new Wildlife Retreat at Taronga.
The Ultimate Retreat Package includes a three-course dinner, à-la-carte breakfast, immersive and exclusive Australian animal experiences and two-day complimentary general admission to the zoo. Prices for summer stays start from $597 per twin share.
For the ultimate family staycation, the Family Escape Package includes an overnight stay in interconnecting rooms, intimate wildlife tours into the zoo (including after dark when the gates are closed), à-la-carte breakfast and two-day zoo access for the family to explore Taronga Zoo Sydney.
